{"id":3033,"date":"2016-04-18T10:53:13","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T10:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5167.temp.domains\/~leapica1\/?p=3033"},"modified":"2023-03-09T18:33:06","modified_gmt":"2023-03-09T18:33:06","slug":"sdi-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zohf.me\/lp\/sdi-move\/","title":{"rendered":"What My Move to Search Discovery Means for Measure"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>February 29th, 2016.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leap Day has the dubious distinction as a date; it is often associated with either a way to procrastinate on your taxes\u00a0or annoyed children who happened to be born on this date. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, Leap Day has historically represented, well, nothing. They\u2019ve blurred together as completely unremarkable blips in my cosmically brief timeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>But this year, Leap Day had a significant meaning for me.<\/strong> On a day that will not exist again in four years, I accepted an offer to embark upon a new path in my journey to presentation enlightenment that I believe will serve you better than ever before.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>As of April 18th, 2016, I am joining Search Discovery, Inc., as Director of Data Visualization and Storytelling.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3035\" src=\"https:\/\/leapica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1398.jpg\" alt=\"Lea Pica - Move to SDI - Atlanta Sunrise\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past year, I had the supreme privilege of providing part-time analytics support for a lovely non-profit organization <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/analyticsdemystified.com\/blog\/john-lovett\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Lovett<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tim.analyticsdemystified.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim Wilson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, senior partners of Analytics Demystified. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Learning Excel from Tim, aka Gilligan on Data aka the Grand Master Grumpy Cat of Analytics, is a privilege few will experience, and I consider myself blessed.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my other part-time, I built an analytics \/ presentation \/ data visualization training and consulting practice from scratch and it\u2019s been one heckies of a ride. Heckies. Not a typo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the gifts of my side business has been traveling to various digital agencies and training their staff in the ancient art of effective data storytelling and presentation though my Raise the Bar Chart Boot Camp workshops. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>One such agency was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.searchdiscovery.com\">Search Discovery<\/a>, affectionately known as SDI.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When my friends Mike Gustafson and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mymo\">Michael Helbling<\/a> (from the essential <a href=\"http:\/\/analyticshour.libsyn.com\/\">Digital Analytics Power Hour podcast<\/a>) contacted me for private training, I jumped at the opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spent a week with the company during its semi-annual onsite all-staff meeting, which doubles as a weeklong holiday fiesta. I felt privileged to take the company hostage for two whole days of viz-entation boot camp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3036\" src=\"https:\/\/leapica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1401.jpg\" alt=\"Lea Pica - Move to SDI - Holiday Cheer\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, I adore all of my training companies and coaching clients, every last one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>But, I knew there was something special about this place<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when I saw this scribbled on a giant dry erase wall:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3039\" src=\"https:\/\/leapica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1404.jpg\" alt=\"Lea Pica - Move to SDI - Funny Chart\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Oh yes. They were ready for me. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My very first immersion experience was during the company\u2019s White Elephant party, which if you aren\u2019t familiar, is an exchange of unwanted, orphaned holiday gift-astrophes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SDI took it to a whole new level; gifts exchanged included a box of melted cheesecake, Darth Vader underpants, and a <\/span><b>coffee table photo book of one analyst\u2019s facial expressions snapped over Skype by his ingenious\u00a0teammate titled, &#8220;Hey You&#8221;.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Below, a meager recreation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3037\" src=\"https:\/\/leapica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Depositphotos_61988903_l-2015-1.jpg\" alt=\"Lea Pica - Move to SDI - Hey You.\" width=\"620\" height=\"625\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solid gold. Right away I was struck by the team\u2019s camaraderie and energy, which carried through to their training participation in my workshop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The participants were highly engaged and asked brilliant, thoughtful questions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (with the exception of one extolling the merits of clipart. You know who you are.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It didn\u2019t hurt that I was treated like royalty, and for the first time, I understood the meaning of \u201cSouthern hospitality\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I left feeling exhilarated and full from serving and connecting with so many amazing analysts. And when I returned home, I realized something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>As freeing as entrepreneurship is, it\u2019s a bit&#8230;lonely. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have to admit that felt a twinge of sadness that everyone would all continue to enjoy each other\u2019s brilliance while I departed back to my lone wolf journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A Fateful Phone Call <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When SDI dialed me up a month later about \u201ccontinued training opportunities\u201d, I brimmed with glee at the prospect of visiting again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Except, they lied. They weren\u2019t interested in more training. <\/span><b>They wanted me to come work for them as their Director of Data Storytelling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a brand-new position designed to bring the Present Beyond Measure workshops to so many more analysts and marketers in need. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is their first subject matter expert role, with the objective of building unique internal competencies. All while allowing me to build my own brand through blogging, podcasting, and speaking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You mean, a full-time job&#8230;at a crazy-awesome company&#8230;doing the very thing I abso-posi-tutely love to do most???<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It didn\u2019t take me long to say yes, and I did. On Leap Day, as luck would have it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>So what does this move mean for you?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, <\/span><b>this move means more.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More time to create content that helps you kick ass in the conference room every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More access to a gaggle of top analytical talent to understand the challenges you face in getting your insights remembered and acted upon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More ways to empower you with a practical toolbelt for impactful data storytelling, not abstract or aspirational theories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>And finally, more ways to get to know you.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for SDI, helping them to build a competency of effective data presentation to help distinguish them in the digital analytics industry is a mission I\u2019m only too glad to support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What will change about working with me? <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing! I\u2019ll still be bloggin\u2019, podcastin\u2019, trainin\u2019 and speakin\u2019 so <\/span><b>if you\u2019re ready to accelerate how insights are presented in your organization, contact me anytime<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leap simply had to be this year, this company, and this \u201cme\u201d. There was no other time where this new path would be so clear. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So as I take this new leap, I look forward to serve you in more ways than ever before.
